PROCESS TECHNICIAN

 GENERAL PURPOSE OF JOB The process technician purpose is to ensure the injection molding machines, tooling, materials, and equipment are operating at maximum efficiency, at the recommended set points, with a goal of no unscheduled downtime and zero defects.  ESSENTIAL DUTIES, TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  
  • Must be able to perform all set up technician functions and responsibilities at peak efficiency as well as train new employees.
  • Coordinates production schedule and priorities with supervision, scheduling, and setup technicians
  • Must ensure all machine safety features are functioning properly such as drop bar and door switches.
  • Maintain a safe work environment by following all safety standards and housekeeping guidelines.
  • Confirm all machine process parameters are operating to master setup sheets.
  • Capable of efficiently starting, stopping, programming, and optimizing an injection molding machine and process using decoupled molding methodology. 
  • Ability to respond to calls from quality and operators regarding part, process, or machine issues.
  • Can differentiate and troubleshoot problems related to equipment, machine, process, material, and mold to initiate repairs and implement corrective actions quickly to minimize downtime.
  • Ability to document changes to process parameters on to revised master setup sheets, parameters change logs, process check sheets, SPC charts, etc.
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and rebuild end-of-arm tooling as well as program basic operations of the robot.
  • Continuously improves job function by reducing costs and improving scrap rates.
  • Maximizes machine uptime with the objective of reducing and eliminating downtime.
  • Drive reduction of scrap through problem solving common process related defects such as shorts, flash, burns, etc.
  • Assist in training new Process Technicians, Operators, and Setup Technicians where required.
  • Capable of using basic measurement devices such as calipers, micrometers, indicators, pyrometers, etc.
  • Attend job specific training and help to provide training to others in need.
  • Verification the correct material is adequately prepared for injection molding:
    • Material is properly dried (if required) material conveying systems are functioning and set properly (wands, hoses, loader, hoppers, etc.) All equipment is properly cleaned between changeovers.
    • Blenders, loaders, grinders, and any material handling equipment is set and prepared for production.
    • Can properly purge out a barrel and prepare heats for next production run.
  • Perform mold changeovers (pull / set) as safely and efficiently as possible:
    • Works with production and process team on mold change schedule and priorities
    • Able to safely work with cranes, slings, hoists, chains, and forklifts (license if required) 
    • Has a firm understanding of design, function, and operation of injection molding machines and tooling
    • Completes basic machine setup: heats, pressures, speeds, timers, and clamp/core/ejector settings
  • Can safely perform proper mold clamping, ejector hook up, plumbing, and install of mold
  • Ability to set up equipment such as thermolators, hot runner controllers, valve gate units, etc.
  • Cleaning and inspections of tools prior to production. Ability to identify potential issues.
  • Can change over and inspect end-of-arm tooling and operate basic functions of the robot.
  • Change over nozzles, tips, heaters, or thermocouple for specific molds or applications.
  • Maintain machine and work area housekeeping:
    • Build proper chutes and parts containment to ensure ejected parts are contained.
    • Clean purge and excess material from machines.
    • Remove any parts, etc. from under or around machines.
  • Maintain a safe work environment by following all safety standards and procedures.
  • Continuously improves job function by reducing costs and improving set up times
  • Attends job specific training and helps to provide training to others in need.
 REQUIREMENTS: 
  • High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) equivalency
  • 3-5 years’ experience in injection molding setup & troubleshooting.
  • Must maintain a valid driver’s license
  • Forklift license required 
  • Good communication skills
  • Problem Solving ability
  • Must demonstrate reliability by maintaining an excellent attendance record at all times
  • Must be willing to stay current with technology through continuing education
  • Must be able to stand at a machine for the entire shift; occasionally required to stoop, kneel, or crouch.
  • Frequently required to use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms.
  • Ability to lift at least 50 pounds.
  • Vision abilities include close vision, depth perception and ability to focus.
